Cycleau was a European funded project set up to help us look after our water environment - rivers, estuaries, coastal waters and groundwaters. The driving force behind Cycleau was the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The project ran from 2004 to 2006 and involved partners from Cornwall, Devon, Brittany and Ireland.
Cornwall County Council was responsible for delivering the project in Cornwall and had three demonstration catchments: the Fowey, Fal & Helford and the Red River.

Cornwall County Council approached me to help them produce a series of physical 3D models of the major river catchment areas in Cornwall as a means of engaging the public’s interest at various exhibition locations.

The 3D models were created from Digital Terrain Model data, these were CNC milled from a hard white coloured resin board to allow additional statistical data to be projected on their surface. A number of tests were conducted in order to establish the optimum scale and finish for the 3D models; by using a 3 millimetre cutting tool we were able to achieve a fine resolution that allowed small topographic details to be visible.

The models were shown at the following locations throughout 2006:
