project_Coded Ornament: Contemporary Plasterwork and the use of Digital Technologies_Image to Low Relief

As part of the Decorative Plasterwork Project, the aim of this particular element of the project was to investigate methods for the production of relief patterns using only 2D CAD software, and so develop procedures by which designers without any experience of 3D CAD modelling can create complex relief surfaces within in the digital environment. In order to emphasize how little CAD computer skills are needed to exploit these methods, this ceiling rose design was developed using only typeable symbols, so there was no drawing or modelling involved in the creation of the final design. Using text based symbols as the underlying structure of the design also opens up the potential for creating a wide variety of new designs by simply changing the font rather than the actual layout.
