project_Body Urns

Aims
To produce a functional ceramic vessel developed from previous sculptural work.

To combine the use of digital technologies with traditional ceramic design and production techniques in way which makes the most cost effective use of the digital technologies (i.e. only employing them to produce the elements of the design which would have been unfeasible to produce using more traditional methods).

Project
This ceramic work was developed from a series of drawings produced while developing artworks based on the ‘running’ of plaster forms using profiles of my body. The project was undertaken in 2006.

The urn design is based on combining a simple rotated lower ‘body’ section, the model for which was produced using a traditional plaster turning technique, with a more complex to ‘head’ section which required the use of digital technologies. In order to create the asymmetrical pouring spout, a ‘skinning tool’ within the CAD software was used and the physical model produced using SLS RP technologies. However the surface quality of this model was poor and a CNC milled mould was then created for this element of the master model.

The completed model was used to produce a four piece split mould for the slip casting of the final ceramic pieces. The decorative surface designs where printed using a digital decal printer which allows the economic and relatively swift production of one-off designs, as opposed to the traditional method which involves lengthy screen printing and cover coating procedures and therefore discourages the use of decals for small scale production.

The urns where cast in porcelain and clear glazed.

Outputs
This work is being exhibited as part of ‘Interface’, an internationally selected exhibition of work by craftspeople and designers makers who employ digital technologies within their practices. Launched at, The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Devon in 2006 and touring the UK until 2008.
